Make Plans to Attend the Bar Convention
By Bill Conger

As you can see, this issue of our bar journal focuses on our Annual Meeting, which will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Oklahoma City Nov. 19 - 21. To me, the Annual Meeting is always one of our most special events, and I am really excited about this year. However, it goes without saying that the more people who attend— the better the Annual Meeting. Last year’s meeting is proof positive. It was the second largest attendance we have ever had, and I thought it was one of the best I have ever attended.

The theme for the 104th OBA Annual Meeting is Generations of Change. I believe it is especially fitting because our profession is about to go through a profound change over the next 10 years. You are aware of the phenom of “baby boomers.” I am one of them. The “baby boomers” represent a large segment of our profession; but, sadly, we are getting older.

Over the next 10 years many of us will be retiring and the impact on our profession will be significant because it will be the practitioners, members of the judiciary and legal educators who will be leaving. These ranks will be filled by our current law students and the younger members of our profession. Having gone from a long career in private practice to teaching in the Oklahoma City University School of Law, I have learned all too well the importance of communicating across generations. So I look forward with much anticipation and excitement to the plenary session where our keynote speaker will be Rita M. Murray, nationally and internationally known as a consultant and speaker on multi-generational relations and communications.

In addition to Rita, we are pleased to have award-winning author and news commentator Jeffrey Toobin, who will give the keynote address at our luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 20. Among Jeff’s many accomplishments is his best-selling book, The Nine, which is about the Supreme Court. He will be sharing with us the dynamics of the Supreme Court during a time of transition.

Immediately following the luncheon, our keynote speaker will be available for a book signing. If you don’t already own his newest book, it and several others will be available for purchase at the event.

As you can see from this issue, we have much planned for your pleasure and continuing education. This is such a special time to be with your colleagues from all over the state in Oklahoma City and Bricktown with its vibrant nightlife and excellent restaurants.

I look forward to seeing all of you in November.

“… it goes without saying that the more people who attend — the better the Annual Meeting.”
